Planned Maintenance Shutdowns, Canadian Malartic Mine

Mandate and Goals

The Canadian Malartic Mine is one of the largest open pit mines in Canada, located in the town of Malartic in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Four times per year, for a period of one week, ASDR participates in planned maintenance shutdowns to service various parts of major equipment. Among other things, we are responsible to change the drive pulleys as well as performing maintenance of the conveyor. We also are mandated to coordinate the overall work of the various contractors on site.

Challenges and Issues

• Carrying out maintenance work in a plant teeming with people (over 1,200 contractors and workers involved on each shutdown)
• Managing numerous and different work stations simultaneously, with work superposed on several floors
• Carrying out work efficiently within the shortest timeframe in the industry (maximum of five days to complete all the shutdown work on the entire site)

Solutions and Achievements

• Maintenance on various types of equipment: conveyors, feeders, ore chutes, etc.
• Issuing detailed reports on equipment maintenance 
• Implementing work methods / procedures for the replacement of major parts 
• Completing safety analyses to perform tasks in a safe manner, in accordance with the highest health and safety standards in the industry 
• Benefit from our internal capacities to design and manufacture ergonomic tools to improve health and safety and productivity
